Breeding Koi's

Note:
Written after consulting friends Koi farm in Tamil Nadu.
Thank you for providing us this opportunity of rediscovering a phenomenal hobby together.
Koi's start breeding around their 3rd year and continue to do so until around their 5th year. There are instances (Undocumented) where Koi's are known to have bred until their 15th year. However breeders agree that the 3rd year to 5th are their prime breeding period.
They prefer a nominal climate that is best described as the environment between late spring and early summer. The pH, water temperature (15°C to 21°C) all are extremely important for breeding.
They are shy creatures and the pairs need to have lot of privacy to mate. Beware, the male might push the female to get her eggs out so that he may fertilize them. They are like that so take great care.
Koi's need a place to lay eggs, a fry mesh or carpeting or proper tank bottom is crucial. The Baby fry's cannot swim immediately and need to be protected from flowing with the water or being eaten by other fish. Best is to breed them in separate tanks with about 30 percent plant cover and lots of rocks and crannies.
Before they begin mating choose the best and the strongest and keep them well fed at least a month before mating. This ensures strong fry's that live long enough to reach adulthood.
Well-kept Koi's grow about a foot in the first two years.
Note: Having said the above, we must also be cognizant that commercially available Koi's are bred artificial by hand for various commercial and economic reasons.
All the very Best in your venture to breed Koi's.
